This week, my brand new shiny black 3GS 32GB iPhone arrived in its wonderfully compact box. As I'm on the move quite a bit, I wanted a handheld device to add to my collection of digital nomad gadgets that would allow me to email, text, tweet, post, update facebook and do other quick web-based tasks without having to get my netbook out. The iPhone has delivered on all these things.
So, why not the nexus one or one of the other similar new generation phones, I hear you say?
Well, I love good design and ingenuity and wanted something that has the legs to last and develop in the future. This left me, in my opinion, with my final two options: the iPhone or the nexus one. Now, I am a huge fan of open source software and really dislike DRM so I was edging towards the nexus but changed my mind for two main reasons:
- The iPhone has been proven in the real world and stood the test of time. It's battle scars have healed and there is a global army of iPhone users all singing its praises.
- I could get the iPhone more easily - I just needed to phone my network provider and it was delivered within 3 days. Getting a nexus one seemed a much more convoluted process (although I'm sure this will change soon).
Being a Google fan, I may in the end move across to the nexus one, once it's established a bit more. I'm not one, generally, for going with the crowd but on this occasion, given the money involved and the fact that I had fresh memories of the inordinate problems I had with my previous smart phone (Nokia N95), I went for the 'safe' option.
Have I made the right decision? Only time will tell.
