This week I was fortunate to spend a couple of hours amongst the beautiful drawings, poetry and letters of the great Michelangelo - a Renaissance Soul of renaissance times. Being in the presence of this master's work is nothing less than a sublime experience and this small exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery shows Michelangelo's greatness superbly, inviting you to share an intimate space with these enigmatic works.
The '"presentation drawings" - artworks in their own right rather than being studies for a scuplture or painting - centre around the most significant piece, Il Sogno (The Dream), which shows a winged being awakening a young man who is surrounded by the fading figures of his dreams.
As ever, Michelangelo has much to tell us through his meticulously detailed, ethereal compositions. But whether you attempt to interpret each detail or not, his art trancends dissection to express the love, passion and aching beauty of the human experience.
If you happen to be in London between now and the 16th May 2010, then feed your Renaissance Soul by making a visit to this exquisite exhibition - I wholeheartedly recommend it.
